What is Alimony?
Also known as spousal support, alimony payments are typically monthly payments one makes to his or her former spouse after a divorce. Alimony payments exist to lessen the financial burden one spouse may feel after ending his or her marriage, particularly in those situations where one spouse was financially dependent upon the other during a union. Alimony payments can be temporary or permanent and are typically paid to the spouse who did not work during the marriage or who is likely to suffer a significant reduction in quality of life due to income disparity after divorce.
